island we live on.

Nicolas Voisin Film & Photography is a Thai-registered company based on Koh Samui, working across the island and out to Phuket, Phi Phi, Pattaya and Bangkok.

The work is villas, hotels and resorts — mostly for owners and managers who need images that represent the property properly online, and for the agencies who bring them to us. Almost all of it arrives through word of mouth and repeat clients, which is a slower way to build a business and a much better one.

Eleven years in one place means knowing which villa catches light at which hour, when the sea turns over, and which week of the year the sky is worth waiting for. That kind of knowledge doesn't transfer, and it shows up in the frames.

• Interiors are bracketed, not blastedEvery room is built from multiple exposures on a tripod — four at the absolute minimum, and up to twenty layers on a difficult interior. Frames for the room, for highlight recovery, for the window, and flash frames for colour accuracy on furniture and bedding. That's why the sea stays visible through the glass instead of turning into a white rectangle.
• Twilight often gives a villa its strongest final imagesThe twenty minutes after sunset, lights on, is the frame that converts. It's included in every villa package rather than sold as an extra.
• Graded to one lookSony S-Log3 and D-Log M from the drone, matched so the film and the stills look like they came from the same property on the same day.
• Restraint in retouchingCamera reflections out of mirrors, beds tidied, screens cleaned. Air-conditioning units and neighbouring buildings stay unless you ask. The room in the photograph should be the room the guest walks into.
